Dr. Diana McGill was appointed Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2016.  She first came to NKU as an undergraduate student, graduating with a BS in Biology and a BA in Chemistry.  She went on to earn her Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Harvard University and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  She rejoined NKU in 1993 as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and has spent her entire professional career here, serving as department chair from 2003-2012. 

Since returning to the faculty in her home department, Dr. McGill has focused on student-centered issues such as retention, advising, and curriculum reform.  Along with several other STEM faculty, she also helps direct an NSF S-STEM grant that supports low-income STEM students through a highly-successful cohort model.  She is passionate about the college and is excited in her role as Interim Dean to find new ways to partner with the community to support all our meaningful work.

Dr. John Alberti, interim Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, has taught in the English department at NKU since 1991. During that time he has saved as Director of the Writing Instruction Program, the Assistant Chair of the department, and the Director of both the Graduate Program and the Cinema Studies program. 


He teaches and publishes in the fields of Cinema and Pop culture studies, Writing Studies, and American literature, with a special focus on enriching the teaching and learning experience in the classroom. While at NKU, he has been a leader in developing programs, from Learning Communities to the Book Connection, that build on NKU’s tradition of  creating a student-centered learning environment.

Gail Mackin

Dr. Mackin was appointed Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 2014 and has been a member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics since 2001.

Trained in partial differential equations and numerical analysis, she applies her knowledge and skills across disciplines, collaborating on research projects with scientists in marine biology and natural resource management. Including students in her research and co-directing Project SOAR, a scholarship program for NKU STEM majors, has been central to Dr. Mackin’s commitment to student success.                                                                                            

Rudy Garns

Dr. Rudy Garns is an associate professor in the philosophy program. He teaches courses on neuroethics, philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of science. Dr. Garns is co-author of an introductory textbook in philosophy; he has also published papers with Informatics faculty and co-presented at the Society for Neuroscience conference. As Interim Director of Integrative Studies, Dr. Garns advises all graduate students in the program and is responsible for program development and assessment at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Kelly Keene Jones serves as the Director of Development for the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Kentucky University. In her role, she works to garner philanthropic investments to fund the work of NKU’s students and faculty. Prior to NKU, she held key development positions at the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America. Kelly holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from NKU.
