Graduate Program in English
The NKU English Department offers a flexible graduate program designed to facilitate the individualized study of culture, literature and writing through a customized course of study.
Students can select from or combine four programs of study. In addition to offering a Master of Arts in English, we have four graduate certificate programs that can be earned separately or applied to the MA in English.
All of our graduate courses are scheduled in the evening to accommodate working professionals. Our coursework allows students to pursue coursework across the range of English studies:
Composition and Rhetoric -- Learn how writing works in contemporary society
Creative Writing -- Join dynamic, supportive workshops in new and traditional genres
Literary and Cultural Studies -- Explore diverse literary and cultural texts in a global context
Professional Writing -- Learn project management and writing skills critical to successful professionals
We attract students from a wide range of professional and educational backgrounds, but they share an intense intellectual curiosity about writing and how it functions in society. Our graduate program is ideal for:
P-12 teachers -- Our MA in English is approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board for rank change and is ideal for literature and writing teachers seeking opportunities for professional development.
Professionals who write -- Our professional writing certificates, which can be embedded in the MA in English, are designed for professionals in business, non-profit organizations and government, as well as for those interested in the study of writing in organizational settings.
Future college teachers -- Our MA in English is designed according to guidelines for preparing future English teachers by the National Council on Teachers of English, which cites the MA in English as the basic credential for teaching literature and writing at the college level. Special pedagogical courses provide students with the background to work effectively as college classroom teachers.
Creative writers -- Our creative writing workshops offer a supportive feedback to help you refine your work in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. Pedagogical courses focus on the practice of teaching writing in a workshop format.
