Audition Requirements

The requirements for scholarship auditions are more rigorous than for an entrance audition. Please consult the requirements below for specific repertoire requirements for your instrument/voice.

To schedule an audition, please complete the online Entrance/Scholarship Audition Form. Please note that students must also submit the required admissions application to the university. For maximum scholarship consideration, students must submit their university application no later than January 15th.

GUITAR

Minimum requirements for admission:

  • Two contrasting pieces
  • Possible scales and sightreading upon request

Minimum requirements for scholarship consideration:

  • A movement of a concerto or sonata OR any solo from the standard repertoire for the instrument
  • Scales
  • Sight reading

JAZZ STUDIES

Minimum requirements for admission:

Instrumentalists:

  • A selection from the Solo and Ensemble List, grade 4-7
  • All major scales, one octave minimum
  • Sight Reading
  • Play the melody and improvise a blues. (Bb or F)
  • An etude demonstrating jazz phrasing and articulation

Vocalists:

  • A selection from the Solo and Ensemble List
  • Perform the following jazz standards from memory
    • Misty
    • Fly me to the Moon
    • Girl from Ipanema

Pianists, bassists, guitarists:

  • All potential students MUST read music!
  • All major scales, one octave minimum. (Pianists hands together)
  • Level 4 minimum classical etude or movement from a classical piece.
  • Sight reading
  • Play the melody, accompany, and improvise a blues. (Bb or F)

Drumset:

  • Must perform a snare drum solo from Pratt 15 Contest solos or Cirone Portraits in Rhythm.
  • Must be able to perform these basic rhythms on the drumset.
    • Medium swing
    • Backbeat with 4 on the Floor at 120 bpm
    • 12 bar Blues shuffle
    • Bossa Nova
  • Snare drum reading exercise
  • Melodic reading exercise on piano, a mallet instrument, or voice.
  • (optional) Drumset solo transcription (max roach, philly joe jones, etc…)
  • (optional) Xylophone Vibraphone or Marimba solo selection

Minimum requirements for scholarship consideration:

Instrumentalists

  • A selection from the Solo and Ensemble List, grade 5-7
  • All major scales, full range of the instrument
  • Minor scales, one octave minimum in all the forms up to 3 flats, 3 sharps.
  • Sight Reading
  • Play the melody and improvise a blues from memory. (Bb or F)
  • Perform one jazz standard (not a blues) melody and improvise from memory.

Pianists, bassists, guitarists:

  • All major scales, 2 octaves. (Pianists hands together)
  • Minor scales, all 3 forms, up to 4 flats, 4 sharps.
  • Sight Reading
  • Play the melody, accompany and improvise a blues from memory.
  • Play the melody, accompany and improvise two jazz standards of contrasting styles from memory.

Drumset:

  • Same as the minimum requirements for admission. Please see above repertoire requirements.

Keyboard

Minimum requirements for admission:

  • Two contrasting pieces
  • Possible scales and sightreading upon request

Minimum requirements for scholarship consideration:

  • Scales and arpeggios in all major and minor keys
  • Three contrasting pieces from the standard repertoire (one should be memorized)
  • Sight reading

PERCUSSION

Minimum requirements for admission and scholarship consideration:

  • Snare Drum: Your choice of either a concert or rudimental snare drum solo from the solo and etude books of the following composers: Anthony Cirone, Vic Firth, John S. Pratt or similar solo by another composer.
  • Keyboard/Mallet:
    • Our choice of any major and natural minor scale, two octaves ascending and descending;
    • Any complete 2-mallet solo by G.H. Green, Musser, or any classical piece arranged for marimba or xylophone;
    • At least a 16-measure excerpt of a four mallet solo although performing a complete piece of 2-4 minutes would be preferable for scholarship consideration
  • Timpani: Any short 3 or 4 drum etude from The Solo Timpanist by Vic Firth or a similar etude by another composer.
  • Sight Reading: Short passages for 2-mallet marimba and snare drum.
  • Drum Set (optional): Demonstrate basic styles of rock, swing, bossa nova.

Voice

Minimum entrance and scholarship consideration requirements:

  • Two songs of contrasting style (one in a foreign language is desirable)
  • NOTE: Accompanist provided for voice auditionees. Please bring accompaniment parts with you to the audition.

WOODWINDS and BRASS

Minimum requirements for admission:

  • Two contrasting pieces
  • Possible scales and sightreading upon request

Minimum requirements for scholarship consideration:

  • A movement of a concerto or sonata OR any solo from the standard repertoire for the instrument
  • Scales
  • Sight reading

Special FLUTE requirements for scholarship consideration:

  • Music Education/B.A. in Music - required audition repertoire list
    • Select two pieces from this list:
      • Mozart - Concerto in G or D major
      • Boccherini - Concerto in D major
      • Bloch - Suite Modale
      • Godard - “Allegretto” from Suite, op. 116 (various)
      • Honegger - Danse de la Chèvre
        AND
      • All major scales
      • One etude from Melodious and Progressive Studies book 1
    • Music Performance
    • Perform all of these pieces:
      • Mozart - Concerto in D or G, all movements, with cadenza
      • J.S. Bach - Sonata in E-flat major, e minor, C major, or G major
      • Griffes - Poem for Flute and Piano
      • Varese - Density 21.5
      • All major scales

STRINGS

Minimum requirements for admission:

  • Two contrasting pieces
  • Possible scales and sightreading upon request

Minimum requirements for scholarship consideration:

  • Scales and arpeggios
  • One movement of a standard concerto
  • One contrasting work (movement of unaccompanied Bach, a sonata movement, a concert piece)
